About Philps Bakery

Designed to be an addition to his already flourishing minimarket in Foundry Square, a bakery was created at the rear of the shop by Sam Philp and his cousin, Everett, the baker in 1958. The intention was to supply the shop with a good quality pasty, but interest quickly grew from outside and Sam started supplying many local outlets including pubs, shops and beach cafes. Due to it's ever increasing popularity, Sam began to focus on the pasty sector of the business by purchasing the premises at Foundry Hill, near the Millpond in 1963. Sam set about converting the derelict warehouse into a bakery, before selling the shop (now the Spar supermarket in Foundry Square). After opening a small bakers shop adjoining the bakery, at Foundry Hill, the business ran very successfully for a number of years with the help of Sam's family and a few local crimpers, one of whom was Mary Coad. Mary was asked by Sam to work a summer season, and is still here today!
Sam enjoyed semi-retirement in 1985 handing over the reins to his sons, Neil and Paul and son in law David.  
1992 saw the first expansion of the business with the acquisition of a bake off shop in Praze-an-Beeble, near Camborne.
The business flourished, but with it's popularity, came the added problem of restricted parking at the premises at Foundry Hill. In 1995 larger premises with adequate car parking at East Quay was purchased, alleviating the problem and vastly increasing business.
Another retail outlet/bake-off shop was added to the portfolio in 2000 at Marazion, cementing what is today, a buoyant family run business.
